SATV Feb 20,Tanahun: A three-day multicultural cultural festival began preserving, promoting and developing language, literature, culture and philosophy in Damauli on Wednesday.

The festival is organised by the Pragya Academy under the patronage of Vyas Municipality and coordination of the National Folk and Dohori Song Academy, Tanahun.

The event will continue until February 21.

The festival was inaugurated by Ashok Kumar Shrestha, a member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly. 

Speaking at the programme, Shrestha said that if a person and a country lose their culture and traditions, they lose their identity.

He emphasised that cultural preservation is a collective responsibility. He further added that the steps taken by Vyas Municipality would help preserve ancient languages and cultures while also educating the younger generation.

Shantiraman Wagle, the Chief of the District Coordination Committee of Tanahun, expressed that such festivals encourage the preservation of traditions, cultures and religious and cultural heritage of various ethnic groups.

Vyas Municipality Mayor Baikuntha Neupane said that the festival aims to preserve, promote, and develop neglected arts, culture, and languages.

He highlighted that many historical, cultural and archaeological sites are on the verge of extinction, and the festival is expected to contribute to their preservation. Mayor Neupane said, “We believe this festival will support the study, research, excavation, and promotion of historical, archaeological and cultural heritage.”

Deputy Mayor Indira Darai said that the festival is expected to enhance creativity, increase local participation, and contribute to community development.

Kedar Acharya, Head of the Education Section of Vyas Municipality, said that the festival would further help end all forms of discrimination, inequality, exploitation, and injustice prevailing in society in the name of religion, customs, traditions, and rituals.

Meghnath Rimal, Coordinator of the Ethnic, Cultural, and Artists' Section, informed that awards have been arranged for the best cultural displays and performances. 

He added that cultural performances representing the unique identity of approximately 19 communities within the municipality are being showcased. The festival particularly encourages the presentation of endangered cultures.

The event features performances such as Balan Naach, Bhajan, Chudka, Kauraha dance, Sorathi, Paudure, Shankha Dhwani, Jhyaures and Ghantu Naach and exhibitions of sculptures and paintings.
