A middle-aged man was seen walking aimlessly at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday, and he had no idea where his family lived.
Later, the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) at the airport handed him over to the Brac Migration Programme, and his family was searched via social media with pictures.
A man named Osman Ghani, who lives in Dubai, identified the man after seeing a post.
The man was identified as Mizanur Rahman, and he returned to his family on Sunday in Chittagong's Sadarghat area.
It was known from his family members that Mizanur went to Saudi Arabia in 2001 and did not keep in touch with them. He used to drive a taxi there.
In this regard, APBn Assistant Superintendent of Police Jannatul Ferdous on Monday said: "Mizanur reached Dhaka on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ BG-136 flight at 12:30pm on Friday. At the time, he was walking around aimlessly. He could not say anything about this family or where they lived.
“We took Brac’s help in finding his family in Chittagong, From there, he returned to his family today (Sunday),” she added.
Shariful Hasan, associate director of Brac, said Mizanur was brought to the Brac centre in Dhaka.
“He is not completely healthy physically and mentally. He also has a wound on his left leg. By calling the emergency number provided in his passport, we found out that it belonged to the broker who helped him get a passport, not to any of his family members,” he added.
He added they informed the police in Chittagong about the photo and passport details. “Later, I searched for his family with pictures and passports on social media. I ask them to contact us. Seeing the pictures and posts, a person named Osman Ghani from Dubai called and said that Mizanur is their brother.”
Shariful Hasan said the government is implementing a project called RISE for the welfare of the people returning from abroad.
“The Wage Earners Welfare Board of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment is working to implement the project. For this, 30 welfare centers have been set up across the country. People like Mizanur can get help,” he added.
Family members said Mizanur has never returned to the country since going to Saudi Arabia in 2001. They later found him through Facebook.
Amir Hamza, a relative of Mizanur, said: "Mizanur's family has not been in touch with him for two decades. He used to drive a taxi in Saudi Arabia. He has five other brothers.”
