Police disrupted students' "March for Justice" in Sylhet, which began at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) and was foiled when police dispersed them with sound grenades and tear gas shells when they reached Subidbazar on Wednesday.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Assistant Commissioner Azbahar Ali Sheikh said the protest march was halted upon reaching Subidbazar, and no injuries have been reported.
Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters, who began their march towards Subidbazar around 1pm, were confronted by the police. As the protesters broke through barricades and advanced, the police fired tear gas and sound grenades to scatter them.
The police are now clearing protesters from various alleys in the city.
Earlier, according to the Students Against Discrimination movement's "march for justice, protesters began gathering at the main gate of Sust at 11am.
The police, who were already stationed there, obstructed them.
