MacKenzie Scott, former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, recently gave away a staggering amount of over $640 million to hundreds of charity organisations that help people in difficult situations.
Scott's announcement came after tech billionaire Elon Musk accused her of "destroying Western civilisation" by distributing money. Initially, she pledged to give away $250 million to the NGOs. But after Elon Musk's comment, she more than doubled the money.
In her recent bid on March 19, MacKenzie Scott gave the whopping amount to 361 nonprofit groups that are working across the United States. These groups were chosen carefully from a large pool of applicants because of their great work supporting people with limited resources and those facing discrimination, the 53-year-old philanthropist said in a post on her Yield Giving website.
“Each of these 361 community-led non-profits was elevated by peer organisations and a round-2 evaluation panel for their outstanding work advancing the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meagre or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles," she said.
She also thanked “everyone on the evaluation and implementation teams for their roles in creating this pathway to support for people working to improve access to foundational resources in their communities. They are vital agents of change.”
The renowned philanthropist and author has been making headlines with her philanthropic efforts ever since she took divorce from Jeff Bezos in 2019.
MacKenzie Scott pledged to donate the majority of her fortune through the Giving Pledge initiative as she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to giving back. Over the years, she has contributed substantial amounts to various charities, including those supporting Asian Americans, Black girls, education, and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Scott has been known for her kindness for several years. Following her divorce from Jeff Bezos, she promised to donate most of her wealth to charity. Since then, she has given away billions of dollars to many different organisations, including those that help underprivileged communities, fight for racial justice, and promote education for girls.
In total, Scott has donated over $17 billion to more than 2,300 organisations. She is still one of the richest people in the world. Scott has a current net worth of $36.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
