Fuel prices continued to surge to record high levels for the fourth straight day. In Delhi, petrol and diesel rates were up 35 paise. It will now cost you Rs 108.99 and Rs 97.72 per litre respectively, according to Indian Oil Corporation.

Maximum city Mumbai has the maximum rate. Petrol and diesel prices per litre are now retailing at Rs 114.81 and Rs 105.86. In Kolkata, it is Rs 109.46 and Rs 100.84 and Rs 105.74 and Rs 101.92 in Chennai.

For the past year, oil consuming countries have become increasingly anxious at crude’s resurgence: first to $50 a barrel, then $75 and now to more than $85. And when Vladimir Putin, one of the leaders of the OPEC+ cartel, warned that $100 a barrel was a distinct possibility, the alarm bells really started ringing. Now, as quickening inflation pushes some central banks toward earlier-than-expected interest rate hikes, US, India, Japan and other consuming countries are putting the strongest diplomatic pressure on the cartel in years.

India on Friday said it will use whatever "margin of persuasion" it has while talking to oil-producing nations to make sure the fuel prices are down in the country. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India's dependence on traditional energy sources such as petrol and coal will remain for a very long time and the transition to green energy sources will be orderly only if their prices are affordable.
