The 24-hour token strike initiated by the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union (SLRSMU) was called off last night, the union said.

They said the strike began on Tuesday (9) at midnight against offering to appoint a Deputy General Manager (Commercial) who has been accused of corruption.

"We demonstrated our displeasure to the government over appointing an ineligible person through the token strike,"

During the 24-hour period, more than 40 trains, including long-distance and office trains were cancelled. Most of the ticket counters were closed, and no tickets were issued to passengers.

The responsibility for causing inconvenience to commuters should be borne by the respective authorities who were being this unsuitable appointment.
