An 8km tailback was reported on the bridge on Tuesday morning
The Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway experienced a surge in traffic ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, leading to a toll collection of Tk3,25,51,450 in 24 hours.
A total of 42,560 vehicles crossed the bridge from Sunday to Monday midnight.
An additional 6,841 motorcycles were recorded to have crossed through the Bangabandhu Bridge during the same period.
According to the Bangabandhu Bridge authority, a total of 24,817 vehicles bound for northern districts crossed the bridge, resulting in a toll collection of Tk1,66,94,900. Additionally, some 17,743 vehicles bound for Dhaka made the crossing, and Tk1,58,56,550 in tolls was collected.
Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu bridge highway, Bangladesh's second-largest, serves as the sole road connection between North Bengal and the capital, Dhaka.
During Eid, the influx of vehicles from people returning to their homes leads to traffic congestion on this highway. Nearly 23-24 districts' vehicles utilize this route for their travel needs.
In this regard, Bangabandhu Bridge Executive Engineer Ahsanul Kabir Pavel, said there has been a noticeable increase in the number of vehicles on the highway on Tuesday. Currently, vehicles are passing through 18 toll collection booths located on both sides of the Bangabandhu Bridge. Additionally, dedicated booths for motorcycles have been set up on both sides.
Meanwhile, the increased traffic resulted in an 8km tailback on the bridge on Tuesday morning.
