A 14-km long traffic jam has been created on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge highway due to a road accident and reckless driving.

The congestion was created from the east side of the Bangabandhu Bridge to Elenga in Kalihati upazila of Tangail in the early hours of Wednesday.

Hasem Mia, a bus driver going to the Jokarchar area from Sirajganj, said that it took about one and a half hours to travel from Elenga to Jokarchar, which usually takes only 10 minutes.

“I heard there was an accident. So the vehicles on the road were not moving.”

Bangabandhu Bridge East police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Safiqul Islam said that a truck carrying raw materials met with an accident in the Salla area of the highway around 2am.

It took a long time to unload the goods from that truck. Due to this, the pressure of vehicles increased and created traffic jams. Besides, traffic congestion was created due to reckless driving, said the police official.

“We are trying to make the situation normal,” said the official.
