SATV, March 15, Kathmandu: The inaugural session of the Kasthamandap Dialogue: Connecting Ideas, Shaping Futures commenced today in Kathmandu, bringing together policymakers, academics, and experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges of Nepal-China cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The two-day event, organized by the Foundation for Peace, Development and Socialism (FPDS), aims to foster dialogue and collaboration to shape a prosperous future for Nepal through strategic partnerships.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Dr. BK Man Singh, President of FPDS, and attended by dignitaries including Rt. Honorable Speaker Devraj Ghimire, the Chief Guest, Jhalanath Khanal former Prime minister of Nepal and His Excellency Chen Song, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Nepal. The event began with the Chief Guest formally inaugurated the dialogue by lighting a traditional Panas, symbolizing enlightenment and progress.
Dr. BK Man Singh, in his opening address, emphasized the significance of the Kasthamandap Dialogue as a platform for fostering meaningful discussions on Nepal's development trajectory. "Today, we gather under the banner of the Kasthamandap Dialogue to connect ideas and shape futures. This dialogue is not just an event; it is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together in addressing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead," he said.
Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of the BRI in Nepal's development agenda, noting its potential to transform the country's infrastructure, energy, and trade sectors. "The Belt and Road Initiative is a visionary framework that aligns with Nepal's aspirations for economic growth and regional connectivity. It is our responsibility to ensure that this initiative is implemented in a way that benefits all Nepalese and strengthens our partnership with China," he added.
He also stressed the need for transparency, inclusivity, and sustainability in BRI projects. "As we move forward, we must prioritize good governance, environmental sustainability, and social equity. The success of the BRI in Nepal will depend on our ability to address these critical issues," Dr. Singh concluded.
Rt. Honorable Speaker Devraj Ghimire, in his address, commended the organizers for initiating a dialogue that brings together diverse perspectives on Nepal-China cooperation. "The Kasthamandap Dialogue is a timely and important initiative that reflects the spirit of collaboration and mutual understanding. It is through such platforms that we can chart a path toward a prosperous future for Nepal," he said.
Speaker Ghimire underscored the transformative potential of the BRI for Nepal, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development and regional connectivity. "The BRI is not just about building roads and bridges; it is about building relationships and fostering trust. Nepal stands to benefit immensely from this initiative, but we must ensure that our policies and strategies are aligned with our national interests," he remarked.
He also called for greater collaboration between Nepal and China in addressing common challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality. "Our partnership with China under the BRI is a testament to the enduring friendship between our two nations. Let us work together to turn this vision into reality," he concluded.
Speaking infront of the dignitaries former Prime minister Jhalanath Khanal extended warm greetings and great pleasure on getting invited as a keynote speaker in the auspicious event. ‘The BRI is not the only interest of China but the proposal for the mutual interest of all the involved country including Nepal', he clarified.
He further expressed optimism about implementing the BRI, which he believes will transform the fate of Nepal’s development and economy. He remembered the signing of the framework of the BRI and is hopeful for its rapid action on the implementation from both the sides. "Since Nepal and China have been close friends for a very long time, this collaboration through the BRI will further strengthen the friendly ties between the two nations," he wished.
His Excellency Chen Song, in his speech, reaffirmed China's commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nepal under the BRI. "The Belt and Road Initiative is a shared vision for peace, prosperity and connectivity. China is committed to working with Nepal to realize this vision and create a brighter future for our peoples," he said.
Ambassador Chen highlighted the progress made in Nepal-China cooperation under the BRI, including the development of cross-border infrastructure, energy projects and cultural exchanges. "The BRI is a platform for mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. The friendship between China and Nepal is rooted in our shared history and cultural heritage. Through the BRI, we aim to deepen these ties and build a community with a shared future," he concluded.
The first session, Understanding the BRI,featured in-depth presentations by prominent scholars and experts. Prof. Dr. Dinesh Raj Bhuju of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) provided a comprehensive overview of the BRI as a modern Silk Road vision. He emphasized its potential to enhance trade, connectivity, and cultural exchange, drawing parallels between the ancient Silk Road and the transformative opportunities the BRI presents for Nepal. "The BRI is not just about infrastructure; it is about creating a shared future for all participating nations," he remarked.
Prof. Dr. Huang Yunsong from Sichuan University, China, offered a holistic perspective on the BRI, highlighting its multidimensional impact on global trade, regional integration and sustainable development. He stressed the importance of understanding the BRI beyond its economic dimensions, noting its role in fostering people-to-people ties and mutual understanding. "The BRI is a platform for collaboration, innovation, and shared growth," he said.
Prof. Dr. Zhang Shubin, Director of the Nepal Study Centre at Hebei University of Economics and Business, elaborated on the win-win prospects of Nepal-China cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He highlighted that the BRI serves as a vital platform for enhancing bilateral ties, fostering economic growth and promoting regional connectivity. Furthermore, Prof. Zhang underscored the importance of cultural and educational exchanges in strengthening people-to-people bonds and mutual understanding between the two nations. He expressed optimism that Nepal-China cooperation under the BRI would not only boost Nepal's economic development but also contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the broader South Asian region.
Former Nepali Ambassador to China, Mr. Tanka Prasad Karki, underscored the importance of the BRI in driving Nepal's economic prosperity. He shared insights from his diplomatic experience, emphasizing the need for Nepal to align its development goals with the opportunities presented by the BRI. "The BRI is a gateway for Nepal to integrate into the global economy, but it requires careful planning, transparency, and strong governance," he said.
The session concluded with a lively discussion on the implications of the BRI for Nepal's development, with participants emphasizing the need for inclusive policies and stakeholder engagement to ensure the benefits of the initiative reach all segments of society.
Session II: Opportunities and Challenges of BRI Implementation in Nepal
The afternoon session delved into the practical aspects of the BRI, with a focus on identifying opportunities and addressing challenges. Prof. Dr. Yubraj Sangroula, a senior advocate and professor at Kathmandu School of Law, provided a detailed analysis of the 2017 Nepal-China BRI agreement. He highlighted its special features, including provisions for infrastructure development, trade facilitation, and cultural exchange. "The agreement is a milestone in Nepal-China relations, but its success depends on effective implementation and mutual trust," he noted.
Prof. Yang Yabo, Director of the Institute of South Asian Studies at XASS, China, discussed the opportunities outlined in the China-Nepal Joint Statement. He emphasized the potential for Nepal to become a regional hub for energy, trade, and tourism under the BRI. "Nepal's hydropower potential, coupled with China's expertise in infrastructure development, can transform the country into a key player in South Asia's energy market," he said.
Dr. Surya Raj Acharya, an expert in infrastructure and public policy, addressed the challenges Nepal faces in implementing BRI projects. He highlighted issues such as financing, technical capacity, and environmental sustainability, calling for a coordinated approach to overcome these hurdles. "The BRI offers immense opportunities, but we must address the challenges head-on to ensure its success," he asserted.
Mr. Wei Zisong, Assistant General Manager of SCIG, presented on the Marsyangdi River Basin Energy Hub, a key BRI project aimed at transforming Nepal's energy sector. He outlined the project's potential to generate clean energy, create jobs, and boost economic growth. "This project is a testament to the power of collaboration under the BRI, and it will serve as a model for future initiatives," he said.
Former Ambassador Lila Mani Poudel countered misconceptions about the BRI, emphasizing its potential to benefit Nepal if implemented effectively. He addressed concerns about debt sustainability and geopolitical implications, arguing that the BRI is a tool for mutual benefit rather than a means of exerting influence. "The BRI is about partnership, not dependency. It is up to us to shape its outcomes in a way that serves Nepal's interests," he stated.
The Kasthamandap Dialogue continues tomorrow with sessions focusing on regional connectivity, sustainable development, and the role of youth and innovation in shaping Nepal's future under the BRI. The event has already sparked meaningful conversations on how Nepal can leverage its strategic partnership with China to achieve long-term prosperity.
