Today, the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in Shravana Masa (according to the amanta tradition) the world of Hindus have a wave of Krishna Janmasthami celebration.

According to hindu scriptures this day falls the birth of Hindu god, lord Krishna, an eighth avatar of Vishnu. Every Krishna temple is crowded with devotees across the country. Here,“janma” refers to birth and “asthami” means eighth, Krishna Janmasthami in combine, forms the birth of Krishna in eight day of fortnight. His birth is regarded as an auspicious birth taken with the purpose of eradicating the growing evil out of the earth. So, Krishna Janmasthami today is being observed around the nation to celebrate the advancing good omen on earth.

Shri Krishna Janmashtami festival is being celebrated in grand manner in Navatandham in Gothatar in the eastern part of Kathmandu, Shri Krishna Temple located in northern part of Budhanilkantha, Krishna mandir of Patan Durbar Square and in other Krishna temples across the country.

For this special day, the devotees, community and the associations of temple wash and decorate the temple along with the streets from days ago as a huge flow of devotees is expected. In the temples, there is a custom of swinging the child idol of lord Krishna on a decorated swing.

This day it is conventional for women and also men to visit temples, take fasting and worship Krishna. All the devotees gather and celebrate by singing krishna bhajans, dancing on the musics, playing musical instruments and by chanting Krishna’s name all day long .

Further, the schools organize a special programme on this occasion where children are decorated with lord Krishna's customs and theatering dance and performances on the the mythical strories related to Krishna to acknowledge the children with traditional and religious side of our nation.

On the occasion of Shri Krishna Janmashtami, the government has declared a public holiday across the country today.
