Nepal keen to join China’s Belt and Road Initiative
Nepal can benefit from China’s progress by joining the Belt and Road Initiative, Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said ahead of his China-tour.
Oli made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Xinhua here on Saturday.
The prime minister, departing for China, said Himalaya symbolizes friendship, as Nepal’s relation with China is as high as the mountain.
“The two countries are working together in close cooperation,” said the prime minister. Stating that Nepal has ended an era of political struggle and started the phase of the new economic development after the promulgation of a new constitution in last September, Oli wishes that his seven-day state-visit would expand and deepen the friendship and cooperation between Nepal and China.
“To get support and goodwill from China is the main purpose of my visit between March 20 and March 27,” said the prime minister.
He said transit and transport agreements with China are to be signed during his visit, adding that Nepal is eager to utilize sea ports of China.
“Nepal is a small neighbor of China and has lagged a little bit behind in development in Asia, but I believe that Nepal can benefit from China’s progress on the economic front,” said the prime minister.
During the one-hour interview, Oli mentioned China’s Belt and Road Initiative for several times, saying it will greatly benefit Asia and the rest of the world.
To enhance economic cooperation with the outside world, Nepal would like to join hands with other partners to make more contributions, said the prime minister. Oli will address the Boao Forum for Asia 2016, which is to be held in China’s Hainan province. On the trilateral cooperation among the neighbors of Nepal, China and India, Oli expressed optimism.
As to attract more foreign investment, Oli said Nepal has been focusing on economic development and there is a sound environment for foreign investors. He called on more Chinese businessmen to invest here in various projects.
