The Maldives has sold over ten million tourist bed nights this year.
Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom made the announcement in a tweet posted on Friday. In his tweet, the minister congratulated industry partners and employees for the achievement. The current numbers suggest the Maldives will surpass the 2019 record of 10.7 million tourist bed nights by mid-December, he said.
While the number of bed nights sold has crossed 10 million, the upcoming Christmas holidays are the peak season for Maldives tourism. A large number of tourists are expected to visit the Maldives over the break.
Although tourism was severely affected in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the sector has continued to show significant improvement since the Maldives reopened its borders in July 2020. While tourism numbers are almost back to pre-pandemic figures, the Maldives welcomed its one-millionth tourist for the year last October.
