It is likely the current surge in Covid-19 cases in Maldives is a result of increased travel during the holidays, according to the Health Ministry.

Health Ministry’s statistics show 148 new Covid-19 cases were reported last week. It marks the biggest spike in cases since November 2022.

An official from Health Ministry told Sun the surge is likely the result of increased travel during the school holidays.

Social gatherings have also increased as it is Ramadan, said the official.

“There’s no danger yet. But we are taking necessary measures,” he said.

Maldives has seen a rise in travel with the schools closed for the midterm break and the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The country is also seeing a rise in cases of other infections diseases such as flu, viral fever, and diarrhea.
