Afshan Latheef has resigned as the chief executive officer of the Local Government Authority (LGA).

Afshan confirmed she submitted her resignation Monday. She said Thursday is her last day at office.

Afshan said President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has accepted her resignation, and expressed appreciation for her service to the LGA.

She said she had been receiving a lot of supportive messages from councils following news of her resignation.

“I thank them for their constant support and assistance. It’s been a huge pleasure and honor to work with them,” she said.

In her resignation letter, Afshan wrote that improving relations between local councils, the government, and the people, and boosting confidence in the decentralization system had been her top priority during her tenure.

Afshan had been appointed as CEO of the LGA on June 9, 2020.

Her resignation comes after her husband, Hussain Amr was dismissed as the managing director of the State Trading Organization (STO) in March, in connection to the internal turmoil within the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which is now divided into two factions.

Amr is a member of the Fikuregge Dhirun faction, which supports the party’s leader Mohamed Nasheed.
