Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was awarded harbor development projects at GA. Gemanafushi and HA. Maarendhoo on Monday.

The agreements pertaining to projects were signed during a ceremony held at the Planning Ministry by MTCC’s CEO Adam Azim and Director Geneal Fathimath Shaana Farooq on behalf of the Ministry.

Both islands, comprising of a population of over 1,100, are deeply involved in the fisheries sector, with Gemanafushi boasting the biggest fishing boats in the Maldives. In addition to fisheries, local tourism is also practiced in Maarandhoo. Therewith, MTCC states that the development of the harbor in both islands will ease difficulties faced by fisheries boats in entering and exiting the island, in addition to docking, while also paving way to boost local tourism.

Gemanafushi project valued at MVR 70.16 million involves 37,516-cubic meter maintenance dredging operations, 65,330-cubic meter new harbor basin dredging operations, 201-meter geobag revetment, 11-meter breakwater, 221-meter sandfilled breakwater outer revetment, 210-meter sandfilled breakwater inner revetment, 405-meter quay wall, 2635-squaremeters of pavement, an 18-meter by 2-meter bridge and installation of navigational and harbor lights.

Meanwhile, Maarandhoo project valued at MVR 43.98 million involves 9,248-cubic meter maintenance dredging operations, 45,000-cubic meter new harbor basin dredging operations, 1,657-cubic meter channel dredging operations, 60-meter revetment, 1,500-meter breakwater, 17-meter groyne, 215-meter quay wall, 194-meter existing quay wall repair, a 70-meter by 2-meter jetty, 2,291 square-meters of pavement,
