Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has called for a meeting of all political parties represented in Parliament today to discuss electoral reforms.

"We have called for this meeting on a request by the Cabinet. I will inform the Cabinet on the outcome of today's meeting. The present government had obtained a mandate to bring in electoral reforms in 2019 and 2020," the Prime Minister told Parliament.

"Many parties have agreed to attend the meeting," he added while ensuring that there will be no cancellation of elections.

However, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by him will not attend the meeting.

"Hold elections first and then we can go for electoral reforms," he said. "The Government is trying to postpone elections in the guise of bringing in electoral reforms," he added.
