SATV KATHMANDU, Nov 19: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is preparing to manage the waste only after its segregation.

The waste from all 32 wards in the metropolitan city will now be segregated. The decision of the KMC comes as the waste from 18 local bodies in the Kathmandu Valley transported to Banchare Danda Landfill Site without segregation has increased both cost and pollution, the Environment Management Department of the KMC said.

Chief of the Department, Sarita Rai, said the polluters will be made more responsible for this and added that the waste should be segregated at its source as per the laws.

Currently, segregation of the waste is being done in wards no 5, 10, 24, 25 and 26 and it will be started soon in other wards too.

The KMC plans to manage 20 percent of the waste at Banchare Danda Landfill Site and the remaining waste is to be managed by service providers.

Rai said, "The waste generated at a certain site would not be managed by piling it up at another site. The quantity of the waste should be reduced by segregation at the source for right management."

So far, some private companies have been involved in the waste management job but the KMC now would do this job through service providers.

The 18 local bodies in the Kathmandu Valley produce some 1,600 metric tonnes of waste every day.
