8 arrests from opposition rally

Eight have been arrested from the ongoing protests by the opposition coalition comprising of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC).

The spokesperson for the opposition coalition Heena Waleed confirmed the eight arrests.

Protests have been ongoing in the Majeedhee Magu area, and hence numerous police officers are also active there. 

A new reporter of Sun present at the area said that police attempted to arrest to for disobeying, but they fought against it. Subsequently, police sprayed pepper spray into the crowd.

Some of the motorcycles parked in the area have fallen as well, according to the report from Sun. 

Those rallying have been calling for the resignation of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and to free the jailed leader of the opposition, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. 

While protests are continuing outside, MP’s of the opposition have been protesting protesting inside the Parliament while the Presidential address is taking place. 

The Parliament session held on Monday for the official address has already been interrupted once due to opposition members raising their voice and calling for the dismissal of the president. 

Prior to the interruption, Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam’s name was called for failing to comply with the regulations.
