A group of 135 Bangladeshi citizens, including women, children and their family members, are set to be evacuated from Port Sudan to Jeddah on a Saudi Arabian military plane amidst ongoing conflict in the region.

Acting ambassador of Bangladesh to Sudan Tarek Ahmed said the Saudi plane is scheduled to take off with the Bangladeshi citizens at around 10am local time on Sunday.

The ambassador said the initiative was taken with the help of the Saudi government.

Clashes between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, have been ongoing in Sudan since April 15.

The conflict centres around control of power in Sudan, with both the military and the RSF accusing each other of violating ceasefires and launching counter-attacks.

Despite international pressure leading to temporary ceasefires, the situation remains unstable.

In light of these circumstances, various governments are evacuating their citizens residing in the country.

A total of 675 Bangladeshi nationals looking to leave crisis-hit Sudan have reached Port Sudan from Khartoum so far.

Earlier, with the assistance of the Bangladeshi Embassy, they were relocated 850 kilometres away from Khartoum to Port Sudan.

It is worth noting that there are nearly 1,500 Bangladeshis in Sudan, and almost 700 of them expressed their interest in returning home.
