The MNP, which won 1,907 votes in last month’s presidential election, will contest the upcoming parliamentary elections in collaboration with the PPM-PNC coalition, says the party’s leader Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim.

During MNP’s council meeting Tuesday night, some of the members inquired about the party’s coalition agreement with the PPM-PNC for the presidential runoff election, and its implications for the parliamentary elections scheduled for April.

Nazim, who chaired the council meeting, said that as per the agreement, the three parties will be working together for the upcoming elections.

“PPM-PNC and MNP will contest all upcoming elections together,” said Nazim, who serves as the parliamentary representative for Dhangethi constituency.

“This means that in a situation where everyone contests the primary, its written on it that all parties will back the winner of the primary.”

Nazim said that the three parties will work together in all upcoming elections, and that primaries will also be held together.

He said that candidates from MNP, too, have the chance to contest the primaries and win seats.

The next national election is the by-election to pick the Male’ City mayor – which will become vacant once the President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu takes office on November 17.

The Elections Commission has stated that the by-election will be held before January 17.

Multiple candidates have expressed interest in contesting the parliamentary elections, which will be held in April.

MNP’s presidential candidate Nazim had won under one percent in the first round of the presidential election on September 9. The party joined the PPM-PNC – which went on to win the election – for the runoff – as party of an agreement that both sides have stated was “unconditional.”
