On the third day of the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, nearly 15,000 motorcycles crossed the Padma Bridge by paying tolls in 26 hours from 6am on Thursday to 8:30am on Friday.

In the last 24 hours, the Padma Bridge authorities collected Tk3.7 crore in tolls, Padma Bridge Additional Director Amirul Haider Chowdhury said.

With Eid just around the corner, people are rushing home to be with their loved ones.

Residents of 24 districts in the southwest region are travelling to their destinations through the Padma Bridge, using the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Expressway in Munshiganj.

This year's Eid journey on this route has been smooth, with no complaints of congestion from travellers.

On Friday morning, there was a rush of motorcycles at the Mawa end of the Padma Bridge toll plaza. Drivers were crossing the Padma Bridge smoothly, following proper directions.

Motorcycle rider Nurul Amin said: “I am going to Khulna with my family to celebrate Eid. I left Rampura around 6:30am and arrived at the Padma Bridge toll plaza around 7am. Although, I had to wait for almost an hour as there were many motorcycles, the processing at the toll plaza was smooth and hassle-free.”

He thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for allowing motorcycles on Padma Bridge as an Eid gift.

In addition to motorcycles, people are also travelling to their destinations using public and private transport.

Confirming that vehicles were crossing the Padma Bridge without any trouble, Amirul Haider Chowdhury said there is no congestion of motorcycles or public transport at the toll plaza now.

“Vehicles are crossing the bridge immediately after paying the toll,” he added.

There was no traffic congestion in the 13-kilometre Gazaria area on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway either.
