Nepal elected as a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC)

KATHMANDU: Nepal has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) for the term 2024-26 in the elections held at UN Headquarters in New York on June 8, Thursday.

According to Nepal's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, Nepal got elected in the ECOSOC member to serve for three years term by securing 145 votes. The Council’s 54 member Governments are elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms.

Under the UN Charter, ECOSOC is responsible for promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“With 145 votes, Nepal is elected as a member of the ECOSOC for the term 2024-2026. We thank the Member States for electing us. We look forward to working closely with all to achieve the 2030 agenda,” the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN tweeted.

Following the election, Amrit Bahadur Rai, the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations, expressed gratitude to all the UN Member States for their trust and confidence placed in Nepal.

The Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations issued an statement that two countries from the Asia Pacific region, apart from Nepal, namely Pakistan and Japan were among the 18 member states elected by a secret ballot.
