Despite failing to win a medal, the exhibition of Nepalese athletes won hearts

Nepal was unable to grab any medals and titles from the 31st Summer Universiade held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China but Nepalese university student delegations have won wide acclaim and honors for its outstanding performance. Widely known as FISU games, the game begun from July 28 and extended until August 8 in which more than 6500 players from around 113 countries and regions participated. The Universiade is known as the "Little Olympics".

China bagged the first position registering its name on the top with 178 medals including 103 gold medals, 40 silver medals and 35 bronze medals on their account. This universiade, China has earned a lot presenting themselves as a very tough competit0or in all sectors among which Chinese women's basketball team won the Universiade again after 20 years, and the Chinese women's volleyball team won the Universiade for the seventh time can be the highlight.

Likewise, Japan secured itself a second position with total 93 medals in which 21 is gold, 29 is silver and 43 bronze medals. Similarly, South Korea was able to take home title of third position as it wins 17 golds, 18 silver and 23 bronze. More than 50 countries and regions were on the medal list.

The Nepalese delegation headed for Universiade was composed of 18 outstanding athletes participating in 7 different games from various universities of Nepal, who have demonstrated high-level competitive ability in fencing, table tennis, martial arts, shooting, taekwondo and badminton. Whether it is individual projects or group projects, they attracted attention with their outstanding performance. As outstanding representatives of Nepalese university students, they have shown boundless enthusiasm and vitality to the world. 

In the arena, the students of the Nepal delegation showed their unshakable fighting spirit and sense of teamwork. In addition to tough competitions, Nepalese university students also broadened their horizons and enhanced their friendship by interacting with students from all over the world. They forged international friendships during the games that will help foster cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.

The participation of Nepalese college students in the World University Games is not only an affirmation of their personal efforts but also an important breakthrough in Nepal's sports career. The Games not only let the world see Nepal's sports skill but also set an example for the younger generation in Nepal, inspiring them to pursue excellence and be brave enough to achieve their goals.

Although they did not win medals, their hard work, perseverance and team spirit will continue to inspire more young people to pursue excellence in various fields and contribute to the development and glory of Nepal.

A Nepalese journalist, Dilli Raman Subedi excited to watch the game expressed, "this is a lifetime experience for me. Indeed, it would be so nice if the Nepalese team could play on this level". He added, "Let's hope, our team will emerge someday. I have hope".

FISU Secretary General Mr. Eric Saintrond expressed to Nepalese Journalists team his full satisfaction on how China prepared and are providing service to Athletes in on going FISU Game. In a press meet  appreciating the service of organizing committee officials and volunteers, he highlighted that only China could make possible such a grand level of FISU Universiade.

Mr. Saintrond added, "Sports should not be influenced by politics. Sports help to minimize political conflicts". He believes FISU will make efforts to minimize or even end Ukrainian conflicts through the sports channels.

Inspite of Nepalese government's diability to help the players financially, Nepalese college students went to Chengdu to participate in the competition at their own expense. Knowing the fact, overseas Chinese in Nepal donated some sum to the players and went to the airport to see the athletes off.

Nepal hadn't participated in any international games after pandemic. The group headed for this international competition in order to testify own level of practice, skill and competitiveness in comparison to the international players. This has been an opportunity for the Nepalese athletes to warm up and be acknowledged about their own capability to be a tough competition for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
