Kathmandu. The Tribhuvan Airport Customs Office has launched a self-declaration room for passengers coming from abroad. Passengers returning from abroad brought gold, jewellery, foreign currency televisions and mobile phones in excess of the standard and when they left without self-declaration, they were involved in customs evasion.

The customs department has informed that after the operation of the self-declaration room, passengers will be able to self- claim the goods they have and pay customs duty for excess goods. Accordingly, it has been arranged that passengers coming from abroad will get the facility of self-declaration before reaching the customs X-ray machine after passing through the immigration hall.

Female passengers returning to Nepal from abroad do not have to pay customs on gold jewellery up to a maximum of 50 grams and male passengers up to a maximum of 25 grams. Apart from 50 grams in case of women and 25 grams in case of men, a person can bring up to 200 grams of gold jewelry at the customs point by paying duty. According to Dr. Tokaraj Pandey, Head of Airport Customs Office, gold that is made only by giving the shape of the jewellery, such as Beruva rings, bangles, necklace, etc., without the use of chemicals, will not be recognized as jewellery.

In the case of mobile phones, the passenger does not have to pay customs if he brings the mobile phone he is using with him. Chief Pandey informed that there is a legal arrangement for travelers who have worked abroad for more than six consecutive months with a work permit and are allowed to bring one more mobile phone with them without paying customs duty. According to him, the customs process should be completed by declaring at the customs office for one more mobile phone.

There is a rule that Nepali traveller who are listed in the social security fund and return after working for 12 consecutive months after obtaining a work permit do not have to pay customs if they bring any size or type of television with them. However, Nepalese traveller who are not listed in the Social Security Fund and have returned after working for 12 consecutive months with a work permit, are allowed to bring only televisions up to 32 inches without paying customs duty.

In other cases, there is a provision to pay customs duty on all televisions. Likewise, passengers with foreign currency worth more than five thousand US dollars must self-claim at the airport. There is no duty or fee to be paid for claiming of amount.
