BY OUR CORRESPONDENT,Humla, Dec. 24: People crossing the Karnali River on a tuin, a traditional wire bridge made to cross the river, need to pay a fare of Rs. 100.  A local businessperson in Lyapche of Sarkegard Rural Municipality-2 constructed the tuin over the Karnali River at his investment and has been collecting fares from individuals.

Saroj Rawat had crossed the river by paying Rs. 100 for the tuin. He said that since the tuin saves one and a half hours of walking, people are willing to use it.  The tuin can hold up to two passengers at a time and tickets need to be purchased before riding it.

Malik Bir Bahadur Thapa, owner of the tuin, has been collecting fares by transporting people and goods. He said that he started the service a few days ago with a personal investment. He charges Rs. 100 per person and Rs. 2 per kilogram of goods.

Thapa has employed five workers paying each Rs. 1,000 daily to operate the tuin. He said that approximately 80 – 90 passengers use the tuin daily. Additionally, the goods of the Food Management and Trading Company Limited which used to be transported via road earlier, now are being transported via tuin.
