The caracas of a Bengal leopard was found floating in the Nagar River in Panchagarh on Friday afternoon.
According to locals, the tiger entered Bangladesh from India through the Darkhor border area. It killed a cow, and ate half of it. Later, the owner of the cow poisoned the rest of the carcass. The tiger died after eating it later.
However, a Facebook video shows that the tiger passed away as a result of the locals beating it.
A wildlife photographer and observer named Feroze Al Sabah claimed that when wild animals cross the border in search of food, the locals frequently beat them up. The same incident might have happened with the tiger.
“Captured animals should be handed over to the forest department instead of killing them,” he added.
Atwari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sohel Rana said the dead tiger was recovered with the help of BGB members and locals.
Later, the police, along with the upazila nirbahi officer and the forest officer, brought it to the upazila livestock office and conducted the autopsy.
A three-member investigation committee has been formed to investigate this incident.
Madhu Sudhan Barman, in-charge of the district forest department, said the reason for the tiger’s death would be identified after the autopsy.
