The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has denied allegations of firing from helicopters on aerial patrols during the recent quota reform protests.

In a press release issued on Thursday, RAB reiterated that no firearms had been used from its helicopters.

“To disperse those creating obstacles and to facilitate the movement of law enforcement personnel quickly to prevent damage and destruction, tear gas and sound grenades were deployed from RAB helicopters. No gunfire or use of firearms took place.”

RAB mentioned that during incidents of violence and sabotage, attackers had used young children as human shields to block roads. “Law enforcement, aiming to prevent destruction, faced obstructions upon arriving at the scene. With children at the forefront, law enforcement agencies refrained from using maximum force," the elite police unit added.

"During the protests for quota reform in government jobs, which culminated in a 'complete shutdown' on July 18, some criminals and vested interests incited violence, arson and sabotage in various parts of the country, causing panic and attempting to undermine law and order.

"Anti-state elements and criminal groups executed unprecedented attacks, vandalizing and setting fire to key infrastructures like the BTV building, metro rail [stations], elevated expressway, [Mayor] Hanif Flyover, Setu Bhaban, data centre, BRTA building, and police and other law enforcement installations. To safeguard public and state property, RAB intensified patrols and surveillance across the country, alongside other law enforcement agencies.

“The attackers and saboteurs launched deliberate, medieval-style surprise attacks on RAB and other law enforcement personnel across various parts of the capital and the country. Over 100 RAB members were injured in these assaults.”

RAB also highlighted incidents where its helicopters had been used for rescue operations.

It said that on July 18, RAB rescued 61 DMP personnel trapped on the roof of the Canadian University building during an attack in Badda, Dhaka, adding that on July 20, it rescued 36 law enforcement members and hospital staff from the rooftop of a building in Narayanganj's Shimrail after arson attacks.

"All aerial patrol and rescue operations by RAB have been documented on video and shared on social media, RAB's website and various media outlets. RAB remains committed to ensuring public safety, protecting government establishments and upholding human rights," the statement read.
