A total of 608 vehicle drivers were penalised in the Kathmandu Valley in a single day for violating traffic rules.
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office took action against the drivers during routine and special traffic checks conducted at various locations across the Valley.
According to Superintendent of Police Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the office, those penalised included 79 drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol, 35 identified through CCTV surveillance, 23 for violating traffic light signals and 58 for overspeeding.
Similarly, 13 drivers were penalised for honking in prohibited
areas, eight for violating lane discipline, 21 for operating vehicles that were not in proper condition and two for driving against traffic rules on one-way roads. Another 369 drivers were also penalised for various other traffic rule violations, SP Subedi said.
The Traffic Police said that monitoring and inspection activities had been intensified across the Valley to reduce road accidents, streamline vehicular movement and ensure effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
Subedi said the objective of the action was not merely to collect fines but to minimise road accidents and ensure safer journeys for the public.
The Traffic Police said particular attention was being given to controlling drunk driving, overspeeding and disregard for traffic signals, as such behaviour significantly increases the risk of road accidents.
The police have been conducting regular checks along major roads and at busy intersections, while using CCTV surveillance to identify and penalise drivers violating traffic regulations.
The Traffic Police have urged all drivers to fully comply with traffic rules to maintain road discipline and minimise the risk of potential accidents.
