SATV, Kathmandu, October 3. The monsoon has withdrawn from western Nepal.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology issued a bulletin today, Saturday, October 3, stating that the monsoon has withdrawn from several western parts of the country.

According to the division, “As of October 3, 2026 (2083 Ashoj 17), this year’s monsoon has withdrawn from most places in Sudurpashchim Province, Karnali Province, and the western parts of Lumbini Province, as well as a few places in the western parts of Gandaki Province.”

According to meteorologists, the monsoon does not withdraw from the entire country at once. The system gradually retreats from the western parts of the country and eventually exits through Koshi Province in the east. It takes several days for the monsoon to completely withdraw from the country.

The average date for the withdrawal of the monsoon from Nepal is October 2. However, this is only an average date, and the monsoon does not necessarily withdraw from Nepal on exactly this day. It may retreat a few days earlier or later. This year, the monsoon began withdrawing from some provinces on October 3, one day after the average withdrawal date. The Meteorological Forecasting Division said the monsoon is expected to withdraw from the remaining parts of the country within the next few days.

The average date for the onset of the monsoon in Nepal is June 13. This year, the monsoon entered Nepal six days later than the average date, reaching Koshi Province on June 19. It gradually expanded across the country and reached Sudurpashchim Province on June 30, marking the onset of the monsoon nationwide.

During the monsoon season, Nepal experiences the influence of moist monsoon winds, mainly from the east. After the monsoon ends, the influence of westerly winds gradually increases.

Once the monsoon completely withdraws, the post-monsoon season begins. This season lasts for two months, October and November. Winter then begins in December and lasts for three months, through February.

Pre-monsoon begins on March 1 and lasts for three months, covering March, April and May.

Until the arrival of the monsoon, Nepal remains in the pre-monsoon season. Once the monsoon begins, the pre-monsoon season ends.

According to meteorologists, Nepal’s weather is broadly divided into four seasons: pre-monsoon, monsoon, post-monsoon and winter.
