Chinese company, on Thursday, was contracted to develop Addu City’s Hankede.

Hankede, to be developed as an integrated tourism model, was announced as a major project by the current administration back in January as part of the campaign for Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential primary. Renderings on how the location would look upon the completion of the project were also disclosed back then.

An agreement was executed between Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) – a 100 percent state-owned enterprise – and China National Electrical Engineering Company (CNEEC) for the project on Thursday during a special ceremony.

Sharing pictures of the signing ceremony via a tweet, MFCM said the execution of the agreement sets the groundwork for tourism growth in Addu City which will effectively bring a new dynamic to Maldives' tourism.

When the project was announced earlier alongside its renderings – MFMC said Hankede will altogether be a unique destination. A total of 1,041 rooms will be developed under the project, as per MFMC.

They also stated that the project would allow Addu residents to reap the benefits of integrated tourism through employment opportunities and create a favorable environment for small and medium businesses to thrive.

The government has also dedicated K. Gaafaru lagoon for real estate tourism alongside Hankede in a decree signed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih publicized on December 2nd of last year.
