Due to traffic jams in Kathmandu Valley, economic losses equal to one trillion 16 billion rupees are caused annually.

Jagatman Shrestha, traffic management consultant of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, informed that due to traffic jams, air and noise pollution, oil consumption, deterioration of vehicles, health problems, accidents, etc., the loss in economic sector is worth Rs. 1 trillion.

He said, "This is a big loss, in order to minimize it, Kathmandu Metropolitan City is studying how to reduce traffic jams."Although KMC is studying the issue of reducing the problem, he stressed that the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management, Transport Management Office and he emphasized that stakeholders including the road department should play a positive role on this".

Traffic management expert Shrestha also informed that he is working with the goal of making the speed of the vehicle five minutes faster within a year. He says that the current situation has been created due to problems in the engineering of public transport operation and management and negligence in fulfilling the responsibilities.

He said that the Federal Capital Urban Area, Public Transport Authority should start working on how to manage vehicles and traffic within the valley. It is arranged that there will be a Federal Capital Urban Area Public Transport Council to operate, supervise and manage the work of the authority, which will be the chief chairman of KMC and the chief vice-chairman of Lalitpur metropolis.

The government has issued the 'Urban Area Public Transport Management Act-2079' for effective management of public transport policy. The legal arrangement of the authority is to make the public transport sector in the urban areas easy, accessible, passenger-friendly, reliable, cost-effective and safe.

According to Shrestha, a transport expert, he commented that the authority scattered in the construction of infrastructure such as road discipline, signage, sky bridge with elevators has not been able to achieve results.
