KANDY - People should be aware of their mobile SIM cards issued under their national identity card (NIC) numbers. If there are any other SIMs registered under their identity cards without their knowledge and if there are any misuse of such SIM cards, the person in whose name the SIM card is registered will have to bear the responsibility, the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) said.

While issuing a public notice, the Commission said it has taken steps to conduct a mobile SIM card re-registration service throughout the country.

It is mandatory that the SIM card on the mobile phones used by the customers be registered in their name.

"People should be aware of the SIM cards issued under their NIC, and if they do not do so, they will be held responsible for any misuse of such SIM cards. People can get information related to the phone company they are currently using by dialling the number #132# on their mobile phones," the Commission said.

Apart from the phone company they are using, they can find out whether there are SIM cards registered under their NICs at any other phone company by calling the customer service of those companies.

If there are other SIMs registered under their identity cards without their knowledge, they should cancel such SIMs immediately.

If any SIM card is used without being registered under the user name, they should contact the respective telecommunication company that owns the SIM card and request to register it.

Accordingly, arrangements have been made to hold the initial programme of the country-wide mobile service for re-registration of SIM cards centred around the Divisional Secretariat offices of the Kandy district on Monday (13) from 09.00 a.m. to 04.00 p.m.
