By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, Feb. 7: The traffic police have taken action against 27 motorcycle owners who caused noise pollution by changing the shape and design of their motorcycles and producing loud noise.

Since last Friday, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, Ramshaw Path, has taken action against the drivers who have changed the appearance of their bikes by conducting a campaign.  Police have also been taking action against owners of modified two-wheelers during regular checks.

The traffic police have intensified the checks as a few motorcyclists tend to modify silencers, lights, number plates, looking glass, socks and handles of their bikes, which leads to accidents. 

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta and Spokesperson for the Valley Traffic Police Office, said that the loud noise emitted by the modified vehicles directly affects the elderly, children and sensitive areas (schools and hospitals) and also causes noise pollution.

Spokesman Bhatta said that the changed parts of the motorcycles have been taken out and by maintaining the standards and their original shape when they find a modified motorcycle. In the Vehicle and Transport Management Act of 2049, there is a provision of a fine from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 15,000 for driving a vehicle by changing the shape of the vehicle.
