SATV, Kathmandu, May. 13 - In recent times, Nepali films have started to become a priority for Nepali audiences.

Nepali films released around the New Year have made a positive start in the domestic market.

Based on the box office report published by the Film Development Board, the New Year 2083 also appears to be promising.

The film ‘Ram Naam Satya,’ released on April 10, has performed well commercially.

According to the Board’s data, by May 9, the film had sold 121,405 tickets and earned Rs. 34.08 million.

The film marks the debut of new actors Aayush Singh Thakuri and Khushi Karki.

The film also features actors such as Sushil Shrestha, Divya Rayamajhi, Prashant Tamrakar, Supushpa Bhatt, Sunil Thapa, and Sudhir Shrestha. The film has been directed by Mycall Chand, who is known as a dance director.

Director Chand said that the film has been made with an attempt to deliver social messages along with entertainment.

The story ‘Paral ko Aago,’ included in Guruprasad Mainali’s collection ‘Naso,’ is a tale that almost every Nepali has either read or heard during school life.

Based on the conflict between a husband and wife, this story has been adapted into plays as well as films.

A film based on this story was made 45 years ago by director Pratap Subba.

‘Paral ko Aago’, released on April 24, is a new adaptation of the same story and title, and it has also performed encouragingly at the domestic box office.

According to Board data, it has grossed Rs. 40.03 million domestically, with 143,724 tickets sold during this period. Producer Sushil Pokharel said that it is a must-watch, women-centric story, and added that the audience's love has made the film successful.

Directed by Laxman Sunar, the film features performances by Saugat Malla, Prakash Saput, Suhana Thapa, Srijana Adhikari, Shankar Acharya, Kishor Bhandari, Sarita Bhattarai, and Manjila Baniya, among others. The screenplay and dialogue have been written by Sushil Devkota, and the main theme of the film revolves around marital conflict.

However, the film ‘Pahad,’ released on April 14 and directed by Tulsi Ghimire, has not performed well commercially. It has earned Rs. 6.39 million at the domestic box office. Once regarded as a hit-making machine, director Ghimire has seen a series of unsuccessful films over the past decade and a half.

Even the second instalment of his iconic film ‘Darpan Chhaya’ failed to achieve commercial success.

After an eight-year gap, his return to direction with ‘Pahad’ has also faced a major setback. The film depicts the social and economic problems arising from the mass migration of young people abroad, leaving villages empty.

After the historic success of ‘Purna Bahadur Ko Sarangi’ last year, interest in Nepali cinema has increased among audiences.

Box office data shows that Nepali films tend to perform strongly during holidays such as Dashain, Tihar, Shivaratri, and the New Year period.
