China Daily, November 16 (Gao Linlin) On November 16, local time, the British government announced that it will open two "super laboratories" in early 2021, which will more than double the country's new coronavirus detection capabilities.
According to Reuters, the two laboratories are located in Scotland and near the central city of Birmingham. When the two laboratories are running at full capacity, the daily testing capacity will increase by 600,000 cases. In addition to testing for the new coronavirus, the laboratory also aims to improve the UK's ability to diagnose cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
British Minister of Health and Social Work Matt Hancock said that although the UK has not established an effective diagnostic system in this crisis, the construction of two super laboratories is an important step forward.
Earlier this year, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised to establish a "world-class" nationwide testing and tracking system, but the government's scientific advisory agency said in October that this system has minimal impact on the spread of the virus.
At present, the United Kingdom is the country with the largest number of deaths from new coronary pneumonia in Europe, with the cumulative number of deaths exceeding 50,000 last week. It is reported that the UK’s daily detection capacity for new coronaviruses has increased from 100,000 at the end of April to 500,000 at the end of October.
