The fire commander of Niamey City, Sidi Mohamed, told national television that a thatched classroom in this elementary school caught fire, and the fire quickly spread to all 21 thatched classrooms. At least 20 students were trapped and unfortunately lost their lives. Niger's Prime Minister Uhumudu Mohammad went to the scene of the accident to express condolences to the families of the students who died on behalf of the government.
