Sri Lankan envoy in Kenya invited to monitor presidential elections in Liberia

The government of Liberia has invited Sri Lankan ambassador in Kenya Kana Kananathan, to monitor and oversee the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in Liberia on October 10, 2023, a statement from his office said. 

This marks the fifth African nation to seek Kananathan’s competence as a Sri Lankan election observer, a moment of immense pride for Sri Lanka. In the past, he served as an election observer in Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe. 

The Government of Liberia's decision to invite Kananathan underscores his reputation as a trusted personality in the region, known for his unwavering dedication to ensuring that the voice of the people is heard through democratic elections.

 Kananathan's participation in Liberia's upcoming elections is a testament to the global respect and recognition he has earned in the field of election monitoring.

 Kananathan will be joining the team of the African Union, Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), European Union, and Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in monitoring the Elections in Liberia.

Some 2,471,617 registered voters among Liberia’s estimated population of 5.4 million, will elect Liberia’s new President, fifteen (15) Senators, and seventy-three (73) members of the House of Representatives.

Incumbent President George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is seeking re-election for a second term.
