SATV January 1, 2025, Kathmandu – Under the theme “Connecting Cultures Through South Asian Literature,” the Second South Asia International Book Fair has officially commenced at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu.
Organized by the Nepal Book and Stationery Business Association and the Current Media and Research Center, in collaboration with the China International Book Trading Corporation, the fair attracted esteemed guests including Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey, Ambassador of China to Nepal, His Excellency Chen Song, former president of the Nepal Book and Stationery Business Association and member of the Bagmati Provincial Assembly Raghu Nath Maharjan, and several dignitaries from various sectors.
In his welcoming remarks, Matrika Sivakoti, Senior Vice President of the Nepal Book Business Association, extended a warm welcome to all attendees of the book fair. He expressed gratitude to all participants supporting the exhibition, including exhibitors, business professionals, associations, and journalists, while highlighting their roles in ensuring the success of the event.
Shiv Sagar Sharma, President of the Nepal Book and Stationery Business Association, clarified that the main objective of the book fair is to attract South Asian and international publishers to Nepal, promoting fellowship programs with Nepali publishers to facilitate the internationalization of Nepali books and literature. He also mentioned engaging children through storytelling sessions and various exhibitions aimed at enhancing reading culture.
Wang Dong, Vice President of the China International Book Trading Corporation, announced that their organization is committed to strengthening cultural exchanges and fostering friendly relations between Nepal and China by supporting the book fair. She expressed hopes for visitors to gain a unique experience of Chinese culture during the event and wished for the grand success of the fair.
His Excellency Ambassador Chen Song emphasized the role of books as mirrors of society, urging all present to study the books available to eliminate misunderstandings and deepen friendly relations. He underscored China's long-standing tradition of valuing book studies and reinforced China's commitment to collaborative support with Nepal, especially as 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of Nepal-China diplomatic relations, calling it a year to be painted with vibrant efforts.
Minister Badri Prasad Pandey remarked that reading books offers insights that surpass any other observational medium, likening it to a meticulous journey rather than a mere ride in a vehicle. He asserted that books possess the transformative power to improve society, carrying the thoughts of the reader and representing a roadmap to a progressive community. Expressing his best wishes for the fair, he acknowledged the organizers' efforts in promoting the culture of reading.
The fair features a diverse array of books, stationery materials, sports equipment, Chinese cultural materials, and panel discussions. Organizers believe this event will significantly contribute to the growth of the book industry and reading culture in Nepal.
