January 19, Kathmandu: The second day of the Chinese New Year celebrations saw the successful conclusion of the Chinese New Year parade in Kathmandu's vibrant Thamel area. The New Year, based on the Chinese lunar calendar, officially falls on January 29 this year.
The event began with cultural performances, including Nepal's traditional Tamang Selo, Newari dances, and Chinese ethnic dances. The highlights of the parade included the iconic Dragon Dance and Lion Dance.
The procession, graced by prominent figures such as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Indira Rana Magar and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, started near the Garden of Dreams in Thamel and traversed through various locations before returning to its starting point.
Speaking at the pre-parade event, Chinese Ambassador Chen Song extended warm New Year greetings to all Chinese and Nepali people who celebrate the festival. He also expressed good wishes for Nepal Tourism Year 2025, reaffirming China’s commitment to ensuring its success. Reflecting on the Nepal-China ties, the ambassador highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations and referenced the agreements signed during the Nepali Prime Minister's recent visit to China.
Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar also extended her greetings, emphasizing the strong and historic bond between Nepal and China. Recalling her visits to China, she expressed admiration for its culture and way of life. She noted that frequent high-level exchanges between the two countries would further solidify their relationship. She also conveyed her belief that with China's support and Nepal's commitment, the country could achieve significant developmental milestones.
The parade in Thamel follows yesterday’s inaugural ceremony in Bhaktapur. Organizers have announced a series of events to continue the celebrations, culminating on February 20.
