The High Court has set Thursday for the bail hearing of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of the BNP, in a case over attacks on the chief justice's residence.
The decision was made by a High Court bench consisting of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin after hearing a bail petition presented by BNP lawyers on Monday.
BNP lawyers, led by Senior Advocate Zainul Abedin, urged the court to expedite the bail hearing for Fakhrul.
Mirza Fakhrul's previous bail request was denied on November 22 by the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, which also ordered him to be sent to jail.
The case against him is related to attacks and vandalism that occurred in front of the chief justice's residence during political rallies on October 28 and subsequent clashes. The police filed the case at Ramna police station.
Apart from Mirza Fakhrul, 59 leaders and activists of the BNP, including Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas, are also accused in the case.
On October 29, the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police took Mirza Fakhrul to its office for questioning. Following about ten hours of interrogation, he was shown arrested around 8pm on the same day.
